Where DVDs Originated

By Daniel T. Abbott

Do you ever wonder who invented the DVD player and how it came about to flood the market and our lives? Well before we go to this topic, let us take a minute to think of what DVD is all about. It is quite interesting to know that DVDs came about because we needed a storage devise to copy and transport data.

Those were the days when our lives were filled with tapes and floppy disks, which today are difficult to find. These were not able to store huge amount of data and besides were easily corruptible. With the improvement of technology and storage media, we got the compact disks. Compact Disks were welcome because they could be used to store huge amount of data and bigger files. Besides they were water proof and the data storage and retrieval was stable.

As is our human mentality we tend to put up with things and use things until we find it impossible to use any item and everybody has this tendency to horde and store. So was the case with floppy disks and drives. It was voluminous but people still stored them in stacks. But the requirement of data that had to be stored was so huge that there was no other option but to look for a storage mechanism to handle huge files.

There was actually no other option for the techies but to find an immediate solution to the data storage problem and come up with some stable and doable new format addressing all the weaknesses as well as the requirements. The problem was being addressed differently by different groups until such time that everybody began to collaborate and the new DVD format was born as a solution to the data storage problem and a feasible and stable alternative.

In line with the huge demand, production facilities were setup and very soon enough stocks began to be produced flooding every retail space with CD Disks which people bought like hot cakes.

You will be surprised to know that the first time the CDs were introduced in Japanese markets before they reached the American shores and thereafter to European markets by the end of the year. Today you find them all over the world.

This can easily be called the trigger for a mobile entertainment and data storage revolution in the industry. The Japanese company which invented the DVD player was later accredited for the same too.

Who benefited the most you think from this development? Of course, who else but the families that spent their vacations driving down across the country. Instead of loads and stacks of floppy disks they had to lug around, now they could carry their children's favorite movies and cartoons in few DVDs.
